Keep exploring…
When you are looking for geography, native people, plants, and animals of a region, you would probably want to begin with the state or region. You can also look for state flowers or trees, or state birds, mammals, or fish. Do not limit your search to just one keyword or search term. Keep exploring until your find the information you really need.

Go to the SC DISCUS site on the media center home page.Follow these steps:• Look for the state you are investigating in Britannica Elementary. Britannica is an encyclopedia that comes in three levels: elementary, middle school, and junior edition. For this pathfinder, use Britannica Elementary to find articles about people, places, and things. You can also read magazine articles, see pictures, read maps, and watch videos. Let's say you need to look up Oklahoma. There are several articles available, and you should think about the information that is more important to you.

• Look for the state, region, or people in SIRS Discoverer. SIRS locates encyclopedia articles, magazine articles, pictures, and videos. The site tells you the reading difficulty of each item you find, whether it has pictures or not, or if the item is fictional or factual. Some materials can be downloaded as a PDF so that you can print the item easily.

Animal Kingdom will tell you about animals by groups, habitats, or name. In this situation, you will want to look at Prairies. You find prairies through the habitat Grasslands. You can also do a search or use information you already know. For example, you might already know that bison live on the Great Plains. You can look for bison to see if that species lived in the area you are interested in.

• Take notes from the information you find.

Databases through your Public Library.

The Greenville Public Library has access to databases, too. Some are the same as the Discus databases you can use through your school media center. Some are different.
